Body & Paint

  • Old Bodyman's Trick -preventing the return of rust
    from Shaver
If you've attempted home-remedy body work, you've probably run into this problem - Rust comes back in a year or so. Here's a couple of hints to help prevent the return of that dreaded cancer of older cars.

Replacing Sheet Metal

Instead off using sheet metal on those rust repair holes, try using sheet aluminum as well as aluminum rivets. It doesn't rust. Be sure to cut out ALL the existing rusted metal before applying your new "skin". And, use a rust-preventative such as "Extend Rust Preventer". This product seems to alter the rust's chemical composure and turn the metal into a useable, paintable surface.

Back Filling

After you have done the best "bondo job" that you can do, try adding a little rust-protection from the back side as well.

Get a pale of Roofing Tar. Using some kind of stirring stick, spread a thick layer of roofing tar on the underside of the area where you have repaired rust holes, etc.

The tar, when properly and thoroughly applied, will prevent moisture and air from getting into the back side of your recent repair. These are two main ingredients for rust and, without the ingredients, rust will have a much harder time getting into your repair work and causing returning headaches.

I had used this method on a repair I did in 1984 and it is still rust free !!

  • Cheap Paint Jobs- making them last
    from BoneYard Bob

Wanting to get a "quick Fix" for your old car and put a cheap paint job on it? Thinking of some place like "MAACO" or good ol' "Earl Schrives?" Then do yourself a little favor before you leave your car in their hands...

Grab a piece of 400 or 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the edges all around your car's doors, hood, trunk, etc. Unless you pay extra for it, these "quick fix" paint shops will not do this for you. And, as many of us know, paint will easily begin to chip off along the edges of the doors, and so on. This can help your paint stick a little better.

I neglected this preventative method on one paint job. And, I still have peeling paint on the edges because of it.

AND, be sure to wipe off all the bugs on the front of your car when you get to the paint shop. Chances are (trust me on this one) that they may become an unwelcomed part of the new paint job as well.
